What is soft skill?

Soft skills often refers to the individual skill of human being associated with it’s “EQ” (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) along with the cluster of personality traits, social graces, communication, language, personal habits, friendliness, and optimism that characterize relationships with other people. Sometimes, it also refers to the character traits and interpersonal skills that characterize a person’s relationships with other people.

In the workplace, soft skills are considered a complement to hard skills, which refer to a person’s knowledge and occupational skills. People seeking employment, should possess soft skills (people skills) as important as the hard skills which are required to achieve success on the job. However, hard skills can be learned and perfected over time, soft skills are more difficult to acquire and change.

The soft skills required for a doctor, for example, would be empathy, understanding, active listening and a good bedside manner. Alternatively, the hard skills necessary for a doctor would include a vast comprehension of illnesses, the ability to interpret test results and symptoms, and a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology.

Why soft Skill?

Companies seek candidates with both types of skills when hiring for most positions. That’s because if you can’t get along with others, don’t have a positive attitude, can’t work well as part of a team, and aren’t able to think creatively and critically it may not matter how talented you are.

Here are the top 7 most important soft skills to have for both interviewing and in the workplace from:

  • Act as a team member: means not only being cooperative, but also displaying strong leadership skills when necessary
  • Flexibility: employees who can adapt to any situation are dependable no matter what’s thrown at them

When you’re writing resumes and cover letters, it’s essential to reference the skills the employer is seeking in your job application materials. The same is true when you’re interviewing. Review the job posting, and be prepared to give specific examples of the skills you have (both hard and soft) that are a match for the job requirements.

Also be sure to present your soft skills to the hiring manager. Present your positive attitude and enthusiasm during job interviews. Don’t just say that you have the skills the company needs. Instead, exude confidence and show your interviewers, with examples, how you have succeeded on the job. Actions can genuinely speak louder than words – especially in a competitive workplace.

 

In NIHM what we teach in Soft Skill Classes?

There are many soft skills essential to your career success. Soft Skills, no matter what they are, have everything to do with communicating. Therefore, Soft Skills can be divided into various types of communication.

The following Soft Skills Types can be distinguished:

  1. Informative, instructive, explanatory Soft Skills.
  2. Convincing, negotiating, decisive Soft Skills.
  3. Listening and monitoring Soft Skills.
  4. Communicative, socializing Soft Skills.

A person’s IQ is defined as their ‘Intelligence Quotient,’ while their EQ is defined as their ‘Emotional Quotient.’ Your EQ is comprised of your soft skills. These are defined as how you interact with other people, or your interpersonal skills. A list of these would include communication skills, creative problem solving, strategic thinking, and team building. In NIHM, We teach Soft Skills to all the students in two modules-

1. Developing English Literacy: One of the most effective approaches to helping students develop literacy skills is having a home environment that supports literacy. Research clearly shows that instructional environments have a powerful impact on student’s growth in reading, writing and speaking. NIHM provides that environment to the student for their best inner self development.

2. Developing Communication skills: In today’s day and age, having solid English skills is a must. It’s becoming the language of the world and all of us got to keep up. But if you’ve been learning for a while and don’t find yourself really communicating with ease, how do you get around the learning slump? You’ll need a bit of ingenuity and dedication, but luckily it’s easier now more than ever.

1. DEVELOPING ENGLISH LITERACY:

These skill sets include phonological awareness, phonics (decoding), fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. Mastering each of these sub skills is necessary for students to become proficient employer. In this module student will find information and further resources to help them prepare for, and pass, the literacy professional skills test for students. The module consists of-

a. Pronunciation:

  • Stress and accents,
  • Punctuation marks,
  • Intonation,
  • Use of word,
  • Pronouncing simple words & Speech

b. Functional Grammar:

  • Transformation of sentences,
  • Adjectives of comparison,
  • Voice change,
  • Narration,
  • Change of tense,
  • Spellings

c. Listening: Interpreting conversation and discussion related to everyday life, responding to spoken instructions in order to carry out requests and commands.

  • Listening- hearing and listening, effective listening, barriers to effective listening, guidelines for effective listening.
  • Triple- A Listening- Attitude, Attention & Adjustment.
  • Active listening skills

d. Reading:

  • Reading and interpreting simple sentences, forms, hoardings, sign boards and notices.
  • Purpose, skimming (take the best part), scanning (reading with attention).
  • Reading current news and giving opinions.

e. Writing:

  • Construction of simple sentences.
  • Writing simple English and preparation- news reports, paragraphs.
  • Form filling, addressing envelopes.
  • Layout of letters- Writing requests, simple comprehension.

f. Speaking:

  • Asking and answering simple questions in English to describe people, things, situations and events. This includes both public speaking and conversational speaking.
  • Be conscious of your pace and volume when speaking.
  • If you are uneasy in personal relationships, practice with a close friend or family member.
  • If you are nervous about speaking in public, volunteer to give presentations within a smaller group and work your way up to a larger one.

2. DEVELOPING COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all life skills. The ability to communicate information accurately, clearly and as intended, is a vital life skill and something that should not be overlooked. We set the module in a way that the students can share an area of communicative commonality in the future. The module consists of-

Some tips to enhance your soft skills are:

 

Be Aware: You need to begin by making a list of skills that you lack by discussing with your close friends, co-workers etc. Awareness is the first step in building up your soft skills forte.

Be Patronise: To build an understanding with your teammates, you should interact more with them. Also take up projects and get involved in some voluntary work.

Be optimistic: Exude that positivism and spread the infectious optimism.

Be causative: Set personal goals to reach new highs and keep targets for you.

Be Humble: Humble oneself, accept and learn sincerely from criticism.

Be a team player: Learn to trust, build comradeship, set common goals, provide support, friendship& get your hands dirty!
